The Teapot Collection

Posted by on

Years ago we had a client in the Bellevue area that wanted to downsize and move closer to her daughter in the Leavenworth area. She was under a lot of stress because her adult son was living in the basement and not happy that mom was moving; which meant he had to move as well and get a job...

Our client had a MASSIVE collection of teapots. They lined built in shelves in the living room. Anytime someone would come to the house she would offer up "Would you like a teapot?" She offered one to me, to my staff, to her neighbors. Of course, we declined the offer. She wanted to find homes for all but her favorites that would go above the kitchen cabinets in her new apartment.

Fast forward, we get our client packed, moved and unpacked in her assisted living apartment in Leavenworth. I am doing the final walk thru of the apartment with my client as she looks at me as says "Where are all of my teapots?" I pointed to the teapots displayed above the kitchen cabinets and said "We displayed them up there as you asked." I am sure you know where this story is going. The client then says "What about the rest of them? What did you do with all of my teapots?" I calmy mention, "You gave the balance away to friends and family." There was an instant look of horror on her face and she said "I would never do that. I loved those teapots. They were all to come with me." Of course I am stunned. I have no idea to whom she gave all of those teapots. Also, all of those teapots were not going to fit into her new apartment. I simpy said "I don't know where the balance of the teapots are."

This was one of my first experiences with someone with memory issues. It was not apparent at first, however, I think the stress of moving and the family dynamics made it worse. At the end of the day, after all of our efforts, the client was disappointed with our services because in her words we "Lost her teapot collection."

What we learned from this experience, at times, you need to be satisfied knowing that you helped someone transition into a safe environment even if they don't recognize the effort made to get them there.
