A Unique Downsizing Journey: Honoring a Client’s Final Wishes

Posted by on

After 15 years in the business, I recently had an experience that was a first for me—one that was deeply moving and profoundly human. I had the honor of working with a client who chose “death with dignity” following a long and courageous battle with ovarian cancer.

Her spouse had already passed, and the toll of her illness had become too great. She made the brave and personal decision to take control of her final chapter. What made this experience so unique was how she approached the downsizing of her home—not just as a practical task, but as a thoughtful and intentional part of her farewell.

We spent time together discussing what she wanted for the contents of her home after her passing. Many items were lovingly gifted to friends and family. Others were designated for donation to specific charities close to her heart. She even shared her thoughts on what could be discarded, with no sentiment attached.

Our conversations were deeply personal—at times moving, sometimes uncomfortable, always meaningful. This experience was a powerful reminder that downsizing isn’t always about moving to a smaller space. Sometimes, it’s about creating peace, leaving a legacy, and taking control of how we say goodbye.

The most important lesson? Be open, be present, and truly listen to your client. Everyone’s journey is different—and every story deserves to be honored.
